When Letting Go Doesn’t Get Easier: A Baylor Mom’s Heart 💚

The Baylor Drop-Off (Round Two)

We dropped my favorite middle kid, Jacob, off at Baylor this weekend (Sic'em) 🐻. Year two. You’d think it would feel easier, but here’s the truth: it doesn’t.

This year looks a little different. His dorm room is a huge upgrade from last year, plus he’s rooming with his cousin and best bud, Ethan, again and now he’s officially a nursing major. 🤯

Yes, you read that right. Nursing. Like his momma.

Here’s the kicker: Jacob has always been the kid who gets weak at the sight of blood. Nursing is literally about body fluids. ALL of them. (Lord, help him.) But honestly, I’m proud of him for leaning into something hard and surprising himself and me. Sometimes God calls us into places we never thought we’d go, and Jacob stepping into nursing is proof of that.

🥲 The Text That Wrecked Me

We finished setting up his room, made sure the mini fridge was stocked, and hauled in way too many Walmart bags (because no college move-in is complete without them). Then came the hugs, the kind where you hang on a little too long but finally let go.

A few miles down the road, my phone buzzed with these words:

“I love you Momma, thank you, and I’m already having a great time with my friends.”

Cue the tears.

Because this is the dream, we raise them to spread their wings, to step into who God created them to be. But here’s the truth no one tells you, even when they’re thriving, even when they’re exactly where they should be, it still breaks your heart a little to let go. Pride and grief somehow show up together, hand in hand.

Here’s the thing I didn’t expect about motherhood: our kids don’t just grow up, we grow up too. They push us, stretch us, change us.

We spend years raising them to be kind, brave, and good people, but somewhere along the way, they raise us too. They expand our capacity to love. They sharpen our character. They make us softer and stronger at the same time.

They are, quite literally, our hearts walking around outside of our bodies. And watching him step into Baylor life in green and gold reminded me that motherhood is always both ache and pride. It is trusting God while letting go.

🩷 The Warrior Mom Perspective

Being a Warrior Mom isn’t about holding on tighter, it’s about learning when to let go. It’s about celebrating the wins (even when they sting), trusting God with the unknowns, and remembering that His plans are always greater than ours.

It doesn’t get easier but it does get sweeter. Because every goodbye is also a front-row seat to the transformation God is writing in our kids’ lives.

🔥 And here’s the truth I keep coming back to:

  • God loves our children even more than we do (John 3:16).

  • He has a plan for their lives that was written long before we ever held them (Jeremiah 29:11).

  • He promises to go before them and never leave them (Deuteronomy 31:8).

  • And when our momma hearts ache with worry, He invites us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).

Being a Warrior Mom means we don’t fight with FEAR, we fight with FAITH. We don’t cling with panic, we release with trust. And we remember that our kids were never truly ours to begin with, they were His all along.

🩷 Encouragement for Moms Letting Go

So if you’re in a season of letting go, whether it’s kindergarten drop-off, high school independence, or waving goodbye in a college dorm parking lot, hear me on this:

  • It’s okay to laugh through the tears. Humor lightens the heaviness.

  • It’s okay to feel both proud and heartbroken. Two things can be true at once.

  • It’s okay to trust that God loves them even more than you do. (Which still blows my mind.) Honestly, it's WILD, but true!

🦋 Warrior Mom Truth

Letting go doesn’t mean losing them. It means stepping into a new role as a cheerleader, prayer warrior, encourager, friend, advisor, but always momma! It means trusting that the same God who carried them through childhood will carry them into their calling.

And that’s what I’m holding onto as my boy begins year two at Baylor. Proud. Teary. Cheering. Trusting.

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

🔥 Mommas, I know I’m not the only one in this season. Whether you just left your baby at preschool or dropped them at a college dorm, YOU'RE NOT ALONE.
